An often overlooked benefit of being around horses is simply being outside with them! Being outdoors is associated with increased happiness and reduced stress, and there are many theories why, including the biophilia theory that humans have a biological drive to connect with nature and animals. Have you ever experienced a lack of energy, increased appetite, or sleeping more during the winter months? Research suggests reduced daylight in winter may affect serotonin and melatonin, exacerbated by the related drop in Vit D. Winter has been a major downer for me for a long time, with short sunlight hours and I get so cold I feel stuck hibernating! If interacting with a horse is motivating enough to just get you outside with them, it's already a gain! Then you can add in the fun, connection, mindfulness, physical activity, nervous system awareness, regulation, etc. I've spent more time outside the last two years than I ever have, freezing and sweating. Somehow I've also tolerated the seasonal weather more than ever, and winter hasn't affected my mood as much. Dress for the weather, and consider the possibilities!
